Day 12 - 20 days of me series

me

This is a series of posts that give you a better idea of who I am. I found the idea from Living off Love and Coffee's blog post but instead of 30 days, I'm only committing to 20. I Googled to see if there were another origins for this idea and found many '30 days of me' posts but this one I liked the most so here we go!

Day 12 - How you found out about blogging and why did you decide to write one

I learned about blogging in 2008-ish and I thought the platform was awesome. I turned 30 in 2009 and that's when I really started to taks a good look at my life. I needed to decide if I was doing something that was fulfilling for me. That year I made my 5 year plan which included the following steps: save a bunch of money, quit my job and apply for the Peace Corps. That was when I started my first blog, Emearld Peace.

Wait.. Megan, you never mentioned you were in the Peace Corps!

Well, that's because I wasn't. I started the application process but decided I should work for a few more years to save enough money so after my assignment was over I wouldn't need to rush to get a job.

In typical Megan-fashion, I let my focus wander and in late 2009 I decided I needed to bicycle from England to Ireland the following summer. It was then I started my second blog, Don't Waste a Moment on Blogger.com. I still have the draft, "Planning for my Adventure" which I started a couple days after Christmas 2009.

Life took another turn in January 2010 when I travelled to Europe for work and met my future boss. Same company, different location.

By May 2010, I was living in Switzerland.

The longer version of the story on how I made my way to Switzerland is told in my one life as an expat preview podcast episode

Living in Switzerland sparked again my interest in blogging, I started my third blog, the Squirrel in Switzerland, but ended up not really using it. It was very difficult for me to slow down and actually write about all the cool new stuff I was learning, seeing, and doing. Now, in 2017, I really force myself to write because I know how much I lose from my memory.

In March 2012, I purchased this website from Squarespace and have been using it ever since. I've started a podcast and have experimented with different types of blog posts. Hiking, everyday life, and now this 20 days of me series. You can check out my old blog posts, I have exported them to this website.

I don't know why I feel the need to publish my writing, but I love it. I'm often too critical of my work and let perfection get in the way of just getting something out. It's the same with producing videos and podcasts, I want them to be perfect and get bogged down in the details.
