Pre-diabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.
Pre-diabetes is diagnosed in the following ways:
Fasting blood glucose (not eating for at least eight hours) 6.1 to 6.9 mmol/L (110-124 mg/dL)
2-hour plasma glucose test 7.8 to 11.0 mmol/L (140-198 mg/dL)
A1C 6.0 to 6.4%
Because there are often no symptoms associated with pre-diabetes, it’s important to get tested, especially if you are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This is because there are some things people can do to reverse pre-diabetes, and delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. As well, some long-term complications of diabetes – such as heart disease and nerve damage – can actually begin during pre-diabetes.
What you can do to help reverse the condition
Eat a healthy diet.
Lose weight (if needed).
Take your medication as prescribed.
Visit your healthcare team regularly.
Get support from friends and family.
Commit to a plan.
Take your diagnosis seriously.
The first three things on this list everyone knows they should do, including you, but how hard is it to actually implement these into your daily habits.
Working with a Health Coach
Hiring a Health Coach is a great supplement to your existing healthcare team. Typically you won’t get much more than 10 minutes with your primary health care provider. You leave the doctor’s office with all the things you should do; eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and lose weight but with no action plan to make it happen or how to STICK WITH IT!
Your Health Coach works with you to identify good habits that will benefit your overall health and how to implement them in bite sized chunks. They will also help you break the bad habits that contributed to the your current state.
If you continue to do the same things you have been doing you will be headed towards type 2 diabetes. Health Coaching teaches you how to change direction and to develop new lifestyle choices to help you live a long, healthy, disease free life.
