Happy Holidays 2018
Dear Family and Friends,
We are happy this year to use technology instead of paper to deliver you our Holiday greetings. So much has happened this year that we wish to share with you! But before going into details…
From Megan and Jörn
In 2017, we purchased an apartment in Rheinfelden, Switzerland. Most of my 2018 was spent working on making our new apartment into a home.
I received a 3D printer last year for Christmas and I’ve been making tons of silly things but also some very useful and nice things. The 3D printer is an amazing tool to have at home, some of the useful projects have been custom drawer dividers in the kitchen, custom gear covers for our roll shades, and holders for the Echo Dots.
I like to make silly things as well, like a T-Rex skeleton, a life-sized squirrel, and a Death Star Christmas ornament. I’m also using the 3D printer for art installations like our 9-panel relief of geographic locations we have visited.
3D printing takes a long time to print but requires none of my attention so I also had plenty of time to hone my wood working skills. I’m a member of a local club that has a workshop full of all the tools needed for wood working projects. Megan keeps a growing list of ‘honey-do’ items so I’m never without a project.
One of my biggest projects was designing and building a TV trunk. Our new apartment has an ‘interesting’ layout, there is not really a good place for a TV. Megan and I looked at a bunch of options but decided on a trunk that would allow us to close the TV away and keep the living room open. I’m happy that the design worked but I’ll be remaking the lid at a later date.
My day job requires long hours of Excel work so these projects are a great way for me to create something from hand and also to learn new skills.
This year was life-changing for me. I don’t say that lightly. Besides earning my degree in Chemical Engineering and moving to Switzerland, there are not too many life-changing moments that are big enough to remember.
From 2016 to the beginning of 2018 I was struggling with anger and being unsatisfied at work. I weighed my options of finding a different job but I knew that would only cover up the underlying issue - I didn’t feel like my work really made a difference in people’s lives.
I re-examined what I loved to do and what I didn’t love to do, from there I decided to pursue something in the field of Nutrition. While researching Nutrition I found Health Coaching. The weekend after Thanksgiving 2017 I signed up for the Health Coach Training Program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN).
Over 2018 my life has changed dramatically. From a visual perspective, I’ve lost 11kg (24lbs) and many inches, my skin looks fantastic and I’ve quit coffee/caffeine. Things you can’t see are my anger issues are gone, I’m more at peace with life, and I have a clear vision for my future.
Perhaps if you don’t see me everyday you would never know that I was in a dark place in my life. We only post the happy moments on Facebook or Instagram. I think it’s important to let you all know that even if someone seems to be happy and healthy on the outside, they may be battling with issues on the inside.
During this year I have re-kindled my need to connect to my family and friends. It’s difficult to keep up with relationships when life is busy but I believe that maintaining the relationships I have are so much more important for overall health and well-being.
As you can tell from our personal notes, we were both very busy this year with our projects, this meant that we didn’t travel as much as we typically would during the year.
Besides relaxing at home over Christmas, we only went on one vacation together. This summer Megan bought a new touring bicycle from the same company that Jörn bought one 2 years prior. We went on a 3-day bike tour in the middle-land of Switzerland, from Lausanne to Biel. This was an amazing trip and we are excited to plan more biking tours in the future.
We also did a bit of hiking but not nearly as much as a normal year. Besides a few local hikes we finally did the 4-lakes hike from Engelberg to Melchsee-Frutt. This hike had really beautiful views and is pretty accessible and adaptable to a wide range of hikers.
We are quite happy and healthy even though 2018 was quite a different year than normal. For 2019, we are looking forward to a longer vacation together and more hiking - but you’ll hear about that later :)
Wishing you all the best for the holidays and a great start to 2019 - we love you all!
